EGYPTIANS BELIEVE AMRE MOUSSA WILL BE NEXT PRESIDENT
Two months after overthrowing President Hosni Mubarak, Egyptians believe they are well on the way to democracy, according to a wide-ranging opinion poll, commissioned by The Doha Debates.
Eighty percent say the country is better off without the former leader - and nearly 60 percent believe he will be succeeded by Amre Moussa, Secretary-General of the Arab League, who has said he will stand for president in elections, scheduled later this year.
The poll was completed in the first week of April by 1,200 Egyptians both inside and outside the country.
Three quarters of Egyptians surveyed declared their country ready for democracy, with a large majority rejecting any delay in elections to allow more time for political campaigning.
In their view, Egypt needed someone urgently "to put things back in order".
The survey results contrasted sharply with the views of students and young professionals who, at last month's special Doha Debate in Cairo, overwhelmingly backed a motion calling for a delay in elections for the sake of democracy.
